One of my goals---however lofty---for this blog is to get people thinking more about the fitness hegemony. What things do we believe for no other reason than they're a part of the status quo? What should we spit out? Is the water nice today?
I was forced to think about this the last time I went to TARGET. I was meandering through the fitness clothing section and noticed that all the women were depicted running on treadmills; the men were depicted lifting weights.
(I was delighted to see a kettlebell; I was dismayed to see him using it for upright rows.)
It's trivial, just some stupid pictures in a suburban megastore. But that's where hegemony lives and breeds---in the little things.
What are your preconceived notions on what you should be doing---in fitness or in life? Where do they come from? Do you know?
